The ultimate short film competition is back for its third edition: Teams must plan, shoot, edit, and submit the best short film in fewer than 55 hours upon the release of a given theme. Up to S$14,000 worth of prizes up for grabs, such as the Blackmagic Design Video Assist 4K, Mocha Chai Laboratories Short Film DCP Conversion Service and Aputure Light Storm. If you’re a passionate student filmmaker looking for a challenge, this is the competition for you!

Open to all pre-university and tertiary institution students.

Over the weekend, plan, shoot, and edit your film of 3 minutes or shorter based on this year’s revealed theme!

Submit your completed short film online by Sunday, 11.59PM. An online submission link will be provided to all teams.

Audience Choice Voting

While our jurors deliberate on the best films, audiences can vote for their favourites online. Here, teams stand a chance to win in a separate Audience Choice category.

A photo album will be uploaded to the nuSTUDIOS Facebook page, containing film stills with video links to each team’s corresponding entry. When voting ends, the team with the most Facebook Likes wins Audience Choice, and will be awarded during the Finale award ceremony.

Hideho Urata

Originally from Japan, Hideho URATA is a Singapore-based Cinematographer and a Senior Cinematography Lecturer at LASALLE College of the Arts (Puttnam School of Film and Animation).

A graduate of New York University, Hideho began his career in the United States, where he worked as a camera operator for NYPD Blue, a four-time Golden Globe-winning television drama.

A feature film he lensed, Kamataki, won five awards at the 2005 Montréal World Film Festival, and the Crystal Bear-Special Mention at the 2006 Berlin International Film Festival. In 2009, he won Best Cinematography at Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival and Best Visual Achievement at the New York Asian Film Festival for his work on The Clone Returns Home.

Hideho has collaborated with many Singaporean filmmakers. His most recent collaboration with YEO Siew Hua on the film A Land Imagined won the Golden Leopard at the 2018 Locarno International Film Festival and Best Asian Feature at the 2018 Singapore International Film Festival. On a personal level, Hideho won Best Cinematography at Valladolid International Film Festival and Achievement in Cinematography at Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

Mohamed Yahssir

Yahssir M., an award-winning filmmaker, is the founder of Millenia Motion Pictures Pte Ltd – Asia’s entertaining, soulful and trailblazing media production house. He wears many hats from leading the operation of the team to being an executive producer and director.

For over 15 years, Yahssir has been bringing stories from the hearts to the screens, through short films, telemovies and dramas. In doing so, he takes conscious efforts to highlight some of the social issues in Singapore. Having won various awards, he is a director with the ability to envision the genesis of a creative idea and manage conceptual projects successfully from beginning to end. His works have been recognized in Asian Television Awards and New York Festival World’s Best TV & Films.

Chong Yu Lun

Chong Yu Lun, along with his producer Rachel Toh, co-founded the corporate video production company, Walk and Roll Studios. Over a few years, Walk and Roll Studios has acquired more than 10 filmmaking awards, some of which include the “Best Motion Picture” for Cathay Motion Picture Awards, “Best Cinematography & Editing” for ciNE65 and “Best Film” for the Gleneagles Mother’s Day short film competition.

During his army days, he produced the short film “Dao Sha Pia” which was shared by our Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong himself. With the demand for more original content from their peers, Rachel and Lun gathered their bunch of friends who are equally passionate about telling stories and created the YouTube channel, Butterworks. As of Jan 2019, it is running at 229 000 subscribers and has gathered over 34 million views on its channel.

Does the film skilfully make use of camera, sound, and editing techniques?

Is the year’s theme carefully woven into the film, instead of an overly-direct approach?

Does the film feel unique when held up against other entries?

Please be reminded that:

  • No copyright infringement is allowed.
  • Necessary licenses have to be bought for music, effects, etc if used.
  • All footage have to be original footage created and/or filmed during the span of the competition. No stock footage may be used.
  • Only short narrative, documentary and animation films no longer than 3 minutes (including opening and ending credits) are accepted for submission.
  • Films containing non-English dialogue and/or narration must include English subtitles.

  • Names of director and producer, along with a brief synopsis of no more than 50 words.
